Anatomy Trains, in partnership with Fascia Training Academy, presents Ball & Socket: The Hip Joint in the Athletic Human – Manual Therapy & Surgical Indications for Preserving Hip Function Live Online with Srino Bharam, MD, MBA, & Tom Myers, LMT, with a presentation by Tom Corbisiero PT, DPT
This webinar is tuned to athletes and the people who train and treat them.
When we reared up on our hind legs, homo sapiens committed to the hip. We have to support the entire spine vertically on top of these two very slippery spheres.
Tom begins with an overview of the hip function, and a review of the major cartilage and ligamentous structures around the joint. The 20+ muscles around the hip are arranged in 3 fans – psoas complex, adductor complex, and adductor / deep lateral rotator complex.
We review these patterns, and summarize the ‘hip grip’ – the characteristic postural set with which the athlete supports the upper body and the athletic stresses generated in the shoulder and spine. Tom finishes by outlining global strategies for sustained hip maintenance.
Dr Bharam follows with clinical presentation, hip examination and the role of specific imaging. Hip disorders seen in the athletic population include labral tears, femoroacetabular impingement , hip instability, stress fractures, and hip dysplasia. Indications for surgical management with hip arthroscopy and return to sport guidelines will also be discussed.
Tom Corbisiero’s presentation will explore a progressive approach to rehabilitation for hip conditions in athletes, focusing on exercise prescription and modality use to facilitate recovery and a safe return to sport. We will discuss strategies for pain management, including red light laser therapy, shockwave therapy, and blood flow restriction (BFR), alongside early-stage exercises that improve joint mobility and maintain stability. As rehab progresses, we will cover controlled weight-bearing movements, eccentric loading, and unilateral strengthening to restore function. The later phases will emphasize plyometrics and force absorption strategies to ensure athletes are prepared for full performance. Additionally, we will address strategies to keep athletes training and working toward return to sport protocol.
Participants will learn:
- Surgical hip anatomy
- Detailed hip examination
- Imaging interpretation
- Current surgical management
- Return to play guidelines
This course will be provided over Zoom webinar with live chat and Q&A.
